Executive Summary

The University of Pittsburgh is an integral piece of the state’s economic success, and Pitt operations directly or indirectly impact nearly every resident of Pennsylvania. With five diverse campuses, a robust research footprint and a partnership with one of the world’s largest academic medical centers, Pitt contributes significantly to the state and local economies in all regions of the commonwealth. 

In FY '21, the University:

  • Generated more than $5.2 billion in economic impact to the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as a result of expenditures on goods and services by Pitt and its staff, faculty, students and visitors 
  • Supported more than 47,000 jobs statewide
  • Generated more than $270 million in local taxes to the state and municipalities throughout the Keystone State
